A borrowed suitcase can meet an occasional need without another purchase, provided the case and the loan are understood. Check it before the departure deadline. The owner knows the bag's history, while you need to establish whether its actual condition and requirements suit the journey you are taking.

At the handover

Confirm the case's identity and any useful maker information. Inspect visible wheels, handles, fastening and lining together where practical. Discuss known issues clearly. Do not accept an unresolved condition concern as something to work around simply because the travel date is close.

Ask for the intended handling, care and any lock instructions relevant to the actual design. Similar-looking cases can have different features. Keep the information accessible and private where appropriate, rather than relying on memory of a quick demonstration.

Before relying on the capacity

Check the case's actual dimensions and maker limits against current requirements from the transport providers for the booking. Do not assume a previous trip's allowance applies. An expansion feature changes the bag's shape but does not establish that the result is permitted for the new journey.

Pack a suitable representative load and assess normal handling in an appropriate setting. Use the case as intended and notice unexpected movement or fastening resistance. Seek the appropriate guidance if a problem appears rather than forcing a wheel, handle or zip to preserve the borrowing plan.

Agree how the owner will recognise the case at return, including any cover or tag that belongs with it. Keep removable personal identification handled appropriately after your journey.

During the trip

Keep the case and its contents handled according to the actual provider and product requirements. Do not add an improvised attachment or permanent marking without the owner's agreement and suitability information. Ownership should remain clear without changing somebody else's property casually.

If damage or another concern appears, tell the owner promptly and agree an appropriate next step. Do not make an unapproved repair or conceal the issue under a cover. Follow the relevant provider process where a transport incident needs to be raised, using actual current information rather than assumptions.

At the return

Empty every compartment and return your belongings to their normal places. Follow the agreed appropriate cleaning and drying process. Account for any associated parts, cover or instructions and check the case's condition before the handover.

Return it at the agreed time through a clear arrangement. A friendly loan should not become indefinite storage because unpacking was delayed. Review whether borrowing served the occasional need before deciding to buy a case of your own. The successful arrangement has a suitable bag, understood use and a completed return, allowing the trip to be simpler without leaving the owner's equipment or its condition as an unresolved task afterward.
